Minutes, KDP Executive Board Meeting
October 18, 2006
Present: Frank Tang, Maris Krasnow, Hee Jin Bang, Myrrh Domingo, Alexis Kim, Karen Griffiths
Introductions of new board members opened the meeting. Myrrh and Katie are working together as Vice Presidents and head of the membership committee. Alex is hoping to find a member who will take over her role as treasurer. She has held this position for many years and needs to move on to other opportunities. Heejin announced that Cecilia Zhao has been working on updating our website.
The first item addressed how to get our name “out” and be more focused on activities and service than on recruitment and initiation. We hope to have more events and to perhaps team with other organizations in developing joint projects. In the past we had co-sponsored some very successful career days with the student government association. We can try to do this again. We can also use the Steinhardt Events publication to promote our activities if we are set up enough in advance to do this.
The second activity was to review our scholarship proposal application and procedure for KDP Beta Pi members. (See attached.) We agreed that we will do a trial run this year to see how it works. We will have a Dec. 1 deadline and the grant amount will be worded as up to $500.” We hope to have 1-2 candidates for this year. Students will need their KDP ID numbers. Applications will all go to Hee Jin, who will read through and send to Alex for narrowing down. Alex will forward the applications for consideration to Frank and Maris. The selected candidates will make a brief poster presentation at the spring initiation.
The third activity discussed recruitment and initiation procedures. Because the event takes place close to the end of the semester, there is often a problem with checks. Students move and close out accounts before we get to deposit the check – or because we have waited so long to deposit the checks, some accounts become overdrawn. To solve this problem we will mandate the fees be in 3 weeks before the event. We will deposit the checks immediately.
Agenda items for our membership meeting will discuss ways to get KDP “out there on the map,” identify activities of interest, and announce the scholarship.
Minutes, KDP Membership Meeting
November 1st, 2006
Present: Maris Krasnow, Hee Jin Bang, Myrrh Domingo, Cecilia Guanfang Zhao, Heedal Kim, & 8 other KDP members
Four major things were addressed at this membership meeting. First, Myrrh and Maris talked about the overall goals for the coming year, focusing mainly on getting our names out, recruiting members, and the possibility of carrying out some projects.
Zooming in on the possible projects we could do, Myrrh introduced the “Reading Is Fun” program and shared the information about the “Reading Is Fun” grant application. Other members (Alison and Chris) also contributed to the discussion by sharing information about potential organizations that may welcome such projects and activities.
The third item addressed was again scholarship application. We decided to further revise the application procedure and guidelines so as to make it more explicit and specific. The revised application guidelines will be posted on the web.
Lastly, members talked about the possible ways to make our website more informative and meaningful to our members at large. It was suggested that a forum be set up so KDP members could exchange valuable information, ideas, and experiences.
Minutes, KDP Membership Meeting
December 1, 2006
Present: Hee Jin Bang, Myrrh Domingo, Cecilia Guanfang Zhao, & 3 other KDP members
At the beginning of the meeting, President Hee Jin Bang first raised the question of whether we should extend the scholarship application deadline (Dec. 1, 2006) or, instead, open it up to KDP executive board members due to the lack of application from KDP members.
The main focus of this meeting was, however, to discuss the “Reading Is Fun” project proposal and other related issues. For instance, the present KDP members talked about and presented a preliminary plan for our “Reading Is Fun” program at the Boys Club next semester. Critical issues raised included how to recruit members who might be interested in participating in this project, when would be the best time for our members to meet with the children at the Club and how frequently we would be able to meet with them.
Vice President Myrrh Domingo also distributed several handouts, providing background information about the “Reading Is Fun” project and shared her experiences of participating in the project previously. Sample lesson plans as well as other program related materials were provided for members at the meeting.
Finally, members discussed the procedure of notifying and recruiting volunteers to participate in the project and the schedule of the next membership meeting at the beginning of next semester.
Minutes, KDP Membership Meeting
January 25, 2007
Present: Hee Jin Bang, Myrrh Domingo, Cecilia Guanfang Zhao, and 4 other KDP members
This meeting focused on issues of the upcoming Reading Is Fun (RIF) project at two RIF sites. Hee Jin started the meeting by asking the two coordinators (Chris and Alison) to provide some basic information about the two RIF sites: The Boy’s Club and the Brooklyn Children’s Museum.
Next, members at the meeting discussed the potential dates that would work best for volunteers who are to participate in the RIF project. Members decided, preliminarily, that starting from the week of Feb. 27, volunteers would be working with children at the Brooklyn Children’s Museum for three consecutive weeks, and starting from Feb. 13th we would be working with children at the Boy’s Club for three days during the week.
Myrrh then talked in detail about the lesson plans developed specifically for the RIF project and shared with the members materials necessary for working with young children and strategies to work with them in pairs or small groups.
Another topic members discussed at the end of this meeting were the potential dates for the Initiation Ceremony. Hee Jin proposed that a committee be set up in order to better prepare for the Ceremony. It was agreed that April 22nd and 29th were better options for the Initiation.
